Concord Center With 4 Breakfast Foods That Promote Weight Loss

As the old adage goes, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” That’s because a healthy breakfast kick-starts our metabolism and we start out the day feeling good.

Dieticians say another key to a good breakfast is getting plenty of protein. This will also provide the body with energy along with helping to leave you feeling full, so you don’t graze on snacks all day.

With that in mind, Concord for Rehabilitation and Nursing has four foods to start your day with if you’re looking to lose a little weight.

Eggs

Include an egg in your balanced breakfast to get a good amount of protein and other nutrients. You can add some whole-wheat toast (for fiber) and chipotle peppers (for a chemical compound that suppresses your appetite and aids weight loss) to make it a healthy, tasty start to the day.

Yogurt With Berries and Nuts

The key to this meal is to avoid flavored yogurt – either plain or unflavored Greek yogurt works. If you use flavored yogurt, you’re going to take in a lot of sugar. To add natural sweetness, toss in some berries, and top it off with some nuts for protein; almonds or walnuts are fine choices.

Avocados

A sliced up half an avocado is great on its own, but what if you baked an egg inside it? Then you’re starting your day with all sorts of good stuff! All you have to do is take the avocado half, scoop out around two tablespoons, crack an egg into each half, and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Grapefruit

The grapefruit is large enough to be a meal unto itself and contains vitamin C, fiber, potassium, and vitamin A. These are usually sweet enough to enjoy without adding sugar too. If you want to add in some protein, serve with a hard-boiled egg.

Concord Center on Ways to Help Local Businesses From Home

Small and local businesses are bearing the worst brunt of the economic fallout as it relates to restrictions brought on by the threat of coronavirus. Some have temporarily shut down, hoping to weather the storm, while others are trying to stay afloat and get creative in offering their services during this time.

Concord Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing wants our neighbors to thrive, so we’re bringing you six ways you can help local businesses from the comfort of home.

It’s not just grocery stores and restaurants bringing goods out to you. A wide variety of stores are taking telephone orders and will bring the items out to your car. Just call and see if this service is available.

Many restaurants – either through their own employees or third-party vendors like Doordash – are offering free delivery during this time when eateries aren’t able to offer dine-in service. Some can even sell alcohol.

One way that temporarily closed stores are trying to stay afloat is by selling gift cards that can be used once their doors reopen.

When you do get that take-out, be sure to tip as you would if you were dining inside (or more) since service industry workers are seeing far fewer tips than normal.

Places like barbers, hair salons, and spas are temporarily closed, so instead of canceling your appointment, reschedule it to a time when it’s likely to be open, that way they are still assured of your business.

Tag your favorite business on social media or leave them a positive review on Yelp or Google. Every little bit helps, and this doesn’t cost you anything.

Concord Center on How to Keep the Weight Off After Dieting Successfully

If you’ve reached your diet goals, congratulations! Unfortunately for many, the gains in the weight-loss department are temporary, so know that losing the weight is only half the battle. The real fight is keeping it off.

Thankfully, Concord Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing is sharing five ways to do just that.

Follow a Realistic Eating Pattern

If you were counting calories during your weight-loss phase, you know that a reduction in calories led to the shedding of pounds. So, do not go back to your pre-diet eating levels. Maintain a realistic number of calories and that should allow you to maintain your current weight.

Plan Ahead for Variations

Sure, it’s okay to indulge on special occasions – a birthday, vacation, even the weekend. Just be sure to have a plan, that way you eat well around those occasions. Cutting calories during the week will give you more of your weekly allowance on the weekend, for example.

Don’t Skip Meals

Skipping meals isn’t encouraged, especially breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast will get your metabolism going and keep you from overeating to compensate later in the day.

Continue to Exercise

Just like eating better, don’t stop exercising just because you reached your target weight goal. If you were working out intensely, you can probably drop that to a moderate level in order to maintain your body weight, but certainly, stay active.

Monitor Your Weight

Keeping a strict eye on your weight will help you catch a potential increase before it gets too hard to fix. If you know you had a bad week and gained a couple of pounds, do what you already know works to get back to where you want to be.

Concord Center on Steps to Prevent Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is responsible for over 4,000 deaths of American women every year, but the good news is that it’s largely one of the most preventable cancers.

Concord Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing would like to discuss the different screening plans that can find issues in the cervix and eliminate them before they turn into cancer.

Pap Test

The American Cancer Society says most cases of cervical cancer have been found in women who did not get regular pap tests. Doctors also may test for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a sexually transmitted infection that can also cause cervical cancer.

Here are the guidelines for testing:

HPV Vaccine

Cervical cancer may be greatly reduced in its prevalence in younger generations thanks to the HPV vaccine. It’s advised for all preteen girls (age 11 and 12). Catch-up vaccines can be given to women up to age 26, and men up to the age of 21 can also get it, so they can prevent the spread of infection. In addition, the Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for women up to the age of 45. The effectiveness of the vaccine decreases as women age, so that’s why it’s important that women get vaccinated at a young age.
